FRESNO, Calif. — An internal investigation is underway into a fight at the Madera County Jail that was initially reported as an attempted takeover by inmates.
ABC News reports that 11 inmates were involved in a gang on gang assault in the maximum security housing unit.
Other inmates attempted to break security glass in order to involve themselves in the fight. They were unsuccessful and officers were eventually able to control the situation.
The Fresno Bee reported that deputies from the Madera County Sheriff’s Department and officers from the county’s police department assisted in locking down the exterior of the jail while jail officers were handling the situation inside.
Madera County Supervisor David Rogers attributes the rise in violence to realignment, as it’s moved more violent inmates into county jails.
No staff members were injured in the incident, and inmates who were wounded sustained only superficial injuries.
The jail sustained moderate damage, including security glass and a security door.
