CHATHAM COUNTY, Ga. — A group of ghost hunters from the Savannah region have concluded that the old Chatham County jail is possibly the most haunted place in the area.

Savannah Now reports that the group, the Savannah Ghost Research Society, reported more than 50 incidents of ghostly activity during their stay.

“We came in with a lot of equipment and pretty much investigated the place,” Ryan Dunn, one of the researchers, said. “We caught a lot with audio. We did capture a couple with thermal imaging and thermal cameras. I would say it’s the most haunted place in Savannah. It’s kind of hard to judge. But as far as hardcore evidence that we brought back from the investigations, we caught more audio files here than anything we’ve ever caught so I’d definitely say it’s a haunted place.”

With infrared cameras, recorders and other equipment, the team reported seeing a shadow figure, ghostly visitors and heard electronic voice phenomena.

The old detention center was last used to house inmates in 1989 and has since been used to store archive records.

Maj. Russel Smith with the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office said he wasn’t surprised with the group’s findings.

“I worked here in ’89 and ’90, and it was kind of a weird place back then,” Smith said. “I worked the midnight shift and it was kind of dark and echoing. You would hear a door slam or hear some footprints in the stairwell, but there would be nobody there. It’s definitely weird here. I guess your mind kind of plays tricks on you.”
