CALIFORNIA — Vallejo and Benicia police arrested an escaped double-murder suspect from North Carolina and a female jail guard suspected of helping him go on the lam, authorities said Monday.
Jeffery Czechonna Miles, 27, and Anita Kaye Vestal, 32, were arrested shortly before 9 p.m. Sunday, ending a monthlong search, said Vallejo police Sgt. Kevin Bartlett.
Miles was arrested after a short foot chase on the 1000 block of Porter Street in Vallejo. Vestal was taken into custody at a motel on the 100 block of Lincoln Road East.
Miles befriended Vestal at the Swain County Jail in North Carolina, where he was being held on suspicion of two counts of murder, authorities said.
Miles persuaded the guard to help him escape, and Vestal supplied him with keys that not only got him out of his holding pod March 21, but also through a locked gate that led to a parking lot, officials said.
