Consensus elusive among state employees in KPERS

WICHITA, Kan. — Kansas lawmakers are again weighing potential of shifting more than 2,000 state corrections department employees from their own distinct group in the Kansas Public Employees Retirement System to a division in the pension system serving police officers and firefighters.

The political decision about movement from KPERS’ correctional fund to the Kansas Police and Firemen’s section involves calculation of the overall cost to taxpayers as well as equitable treatment of government workers.

The 2013 Legislature reviewed the possibility, but indecision left the matter to an interim committee that will take up the issue in December. Division exists even among staff who would be subject to the reform.
