WESTPHALIA, TWP., Mich. — A manhunt was set for a former inmate after he broke into a correctional officer’s home and attacked her boyfriend with a knife, but it wasn’t the police who managed to stop him.

WOODTV reports that a man and his nephew heard about the manhunt and saw the suspect, James Kenny, while they were out riding ATVs.

“I just basically told him, ‘get to the ground,’” said the uncle. He and his nephew asked to not be identified. “I kind of just put my knee into his back and grabbed his arm and put it behind his back.”

A police officer responded to the scene quickly and took Kenny into custody.

The nephew took video and photos of the incident.

The Clinton County sheriff said he plans to recognize the men for their assistance during a ceremony at the end of this year. To that, the men responded that they weren’t looking for praise. They said it’s people like the correctional officer who was being stalked who deserve praise.

“They’ve got to live with these people and deal with them for the next 20, 30 years,” the uncle said. “To those corrections officers, we’d like to say thank you very much.”

The correctional officer whose house was broken into said she wanted to thank the men, and called them her heroes.
