SAUK RAPIDS — A corrections officer by day, Matthew Krengel spends his free time crafting fantasy books for young adults.
The SC Times reports that the “Map Maker” trilogy focuses on a girl spending the summer with her grandparents, only to eventually expand to include things like “the growing rebellion,” “black robed assassins,” and much more.
His books are on sale at places like Barnes & Nobles, and Krengel says sales are good. He’s only ever read one negative review of his book, which operated on the thought that the books weren’t believable.
Krengel only laughed. “I’m a prison guard – I can take negative feedback.”
With two children of his own, Krengel wanted to write a series with crossover appeal but that would be appropriate for the tween-teen audience. Fantasy spoke to him since he’s a fan of the Narnia books and loves Tolkien.
With all three books in the “Map Maker” trilogy out, Krengel hopes to soon begin working on his next story. He wants to someday be a full time writer.
