GAGE COUNTY — A Gage County corrections officer was honored during Wednesday’s County Board meeting for quick thinking that saved an inmate’s life.
Mike Kujath heard a noise coming from the northwest corner of the cell block area on March 21.
Sheriff Millard “Gus” Gustafson said Kujath found an inmate attempting to hang himself with a sheet tied to the bars. Kujath contacted dispatch for assistance and began cutting the sheet to free the inmate before performing CPR.
“After approximately 30 seconds of CPR the inmate regained consciousness and became somewhat combative,” Gustafson said. “Officer Kujath was able to verbally calm the inmate until paramedics arrived on the scene. Due to his quick actions and professional conduct which resulted in saving a life, he is now receiving the Gage County Sheriff’s Office Life Saving Award.”
