No charges in Neb. sentencing scandal

Prosecutors can’t prove criminal intent

LINCOLN, Neb. — Nebraska’s attorney general announced Monday that no criminal charges would be brought against Department of Corrections employees involved in the miscalculation of prison sentences.

KIOS reports that Attorney General Jon Bruning released the results of an investigation into the miscalculation, and said that prosecutors can’t prove criminal intent.

More than 200 inmates, some with violent backgrounds, were released early due to sentencing miscalculations under Nebraska’s good-time law.

Bruning said the miscalculations were the result of a small group of people who didn’t do their jobs.
