ROCHESTER — A correctional officer was hospitalized with leg injuries after falling down a flight of stairs while chasing an escaped Rochester Correctional Facility inmate Sunday night.
The Rochester Homepage reports that the officer was processing the inmate, Chukuma Challenger, back into the facility after he had returned from a work release job. The officer noticed that Challender appeared intoxicated and tested him for alcohol.
While escorting Challenger to a secure unit of the facility, Challenger took off, causing the officer to give chase. In the process, the officer fell down a flight of stairs and broke his left leg.
Challenger hopped a fence and was able to leave the prison on foot. He was recaptured Monday morning.
The officer is still hospitalized and awaiting surgery; he sustained a broken left tibia and torn meniscus.
