DUTCHESS COUNTY, N.Y. — Dutchess County is on track to provide temporary housing for 200 inmates at the county jail site in January.
This will save the county $1 million a year by eliminating the need to transport those inmates to and from jails outside the county, said Dutchess County Executive Marc Molinaro. The current jail, with 250 inmates, is at capacity, which requires housing out more than 200 inmates in jails across New York state.
Molinaro announced Tuesday during his annual State of the County address that an agreement had been reached with the state Commission on Corrections to proceed with the installation of the temporary housing pods — once the county Legislature approves it.
