Orange jail: Suspect’s low bail an accident

FLORIDA — The Orange County Jail said it acted appropriately last week when an attempted-kidnapping suspect was released on $5,000 bond.

A sex-crimes detective wanted suspect Marcus Younge held with no bail.

But a rookie deputy changed the bond after a jail clerk pointed out the bond schedule -- a list of suggested bond amounts -- called for a $5,000 bond for that crime.

The Orange County Sheriff’s Office is not seeking discipline for the rookie deputy.

The paperwork for Younge should have included something in writing that explained why the suspect should be held without bond, a jail spokesman said Monday after reviewing what happened.

A local court policy requires an officer to provide a written explanation if the bond amount differs from the bond schedule, according to jail spokesman Allen Moore.

Last week, the Sheriff’s Office said the rookie deputy did nothing wrong by changing the bond amount, but he could have called a supervisor for advice before doing so.

“The deputy understands the manner in which to handle a similar situation in the future,” sheriff’s spokesman Capt. Angelo Nieves wrote Monday in an e-mail to the Orlando Sentinel. “We are satisfied . . . [with] what occurred at the jail upon receipt of the defendant Marcus Younge.”

Younge is accused of trying to snatch a 9-year-old girl from near her home in east Orange County on Thursday.

The girl told her parents he grabbed her from behind and tried to drag her away. Younge fell, and the girl was able to escape, a report said. He remains out of jail on bond.
