MCKEE, Ky. — Police in eastern Kentucky say an inmate faked an illness then used the ruse to escape from custody.

WAVE-TV in Louisville reported that officers were transferring Steven Sparks from Clay County to Jackson County, where he faces charges of receiving stolen property.

Along the way Friday afternoon, police say Sparks complained about feeling ill.

When the officers pulled over in Tyner, Sparks somehow got loose even though he was still wearing his handcuffs.

Investigators were searching for Sparks on Monday.
