GLOUCESTER COUNTY, NJ — With the one-year anniversary of the closing of the Gloucester County Jail, county freeholders and local police chiefs are looking to gather to memorialize the occasion.

NJ.com reports that elected officials will gather to speak on the impact of the first year of the jail’s closing, which has saved $9.7 million dollars this year and eliminated the need for local municipal police department to transfer prisoners.

Unions fought to block the closing of the jail last June and eventually agreed to a deal that would allow a number of officers to retire early.
