GILLESPIE COUNTY, Texas — Gillespie County Sheriff Buddy Mills and deputies there are accused in a federal court lawsuit of failing to properly safeguard a prisoner who hanged himself at the county jail.
The civil rights suit brought last month in San Antonio claims inmate Damion Schroeder exhibited suicidal tendencies after his May 5, 2011, arrest on charges of driving while intoxicated and evading arrest.
Despite being put in an isolation cell after he was seen tearing up a blanket, the suit says Schroeder, 37, used jail-issued socks to hang himself and died four days later.
