HOUSTON — A Texas lawmaker who assembled state and local authorities to review initial evidence following the death of Sandra Bland in a Southeast Texas jail says multiple investigations of her arrest and death are nearly complete.
Sen. Royce West said Monday in a statement that a five-member team of special prosecutors wants additional information before a Waller County grand jury considers if criminal charges are merited. The Dallas Democrat says the grand jury first met Nov. 12 and another session will be held before the end of the year.
The 28-year-old Bland was arrested July 10 after a traffic stop turned contentious. Three days later, she was found dead in her Waller County jail cell. Her death has been ruled a suicide. West says he’s comfortable with that finding.
