In this episode, host Anthony Gangi speaks with guest Dr. Laura Bedard on the topic of inmate manipulation. As corrections has evolved, correctional officers now interact more and more with inmates. This leads to more opportunities for inmates to study officers and learn different ways to manipulate them.

“Inmates are smart, inmates are manipulative; and they watch everything we do all the time,” Bedard said.

“We need to have our alert on all the time. Manipulation is something inmates are good at because frankly that’s what made them good criminals. A good drug dealer is a charismatic guy who can get people to buy his product, when there may be competition across the street.”

“It’s small and subtle,” Gangi said. “You often don’t know what’s happening until it’s already occurred.”

Gangi and Bedard discuss what ‘downing a duck’ means, talk about how to spot the potential for a staff member to be manipulated by staff and how to keep yourself safe from said influence.

Tier Talk, hosted by Corrections1 columnist Anthony Gangi, features interviews with industry experts, conversations about hot topics and pressing issues, and offers lessons to new staff and old about the evolving and ever-changing field of corrections.
