SPOKANE, Wash. — For the first time since the 1980s, the faulty elevators at the Spokane County Jail have been upgraded.

At the cost of $1.2 million, the elevators now work as intended, according to CBS News. Previously, jail staffers were unsure when elevators would arrive, or if they would get stuck inside one, possibly with an offender.

Three of the jail’s four elevators have been upgraded, which allows staff to move more freely and keep a better eye on inmates.

Staff report that the elevators are much more responsive and faster than before. They are now some of the most modern pieces of equipment in the jail.

The remaining elevator should be refurbished by the end of next month.
