The Associated Press

WAUPUN, Wis. The Waupun Correctional Institution was locked down Wednesday morning after an inmate took a dental technician hostage.

The Department of Corrections issued a statement saying prison officials learned of the hostage situation about 6:30 a.m. The inmate was holding the prison employee in a room in the institution’s Health and Segregation Complex.

He had not threatened the hostage and was talking with prison officials, who were working to have the worker freed, the department said.

The employee was not named. The department said the worker’s family had been notified of the situation.

The inmate’s movement had been limited to the room in the Health and Segregation Complex, and there was no threat to the area surrounding the prison, the department said.

The maximum-security facility is the oldest prison in the state.
