LAWTON, Okla. — Prison officials are investigating a fight that left nine inmates injured Friday night at a Lawton prison, Oklahoma Department of Corrections reported.

The fight was about 8:30 p.m. at the Lawton Correctional Facility, DOC officials reported.

The fight involved about 46 inmates in Unit 2 of the “C” pod at the medium-security, private prison.

Six of the injured inmates were taken to an area hospital for treatment. None of their injuries were considered life-threatening. None of the staff members were injured.

The prison remained on lockdown during the weekend, and visitations were canceled. There are about 2,624 DOC inmates housed at the facility, which is one of three private prisons in Oklahoma, according to a DOC news release.

Matthew Elliott, DOC spokesman, said Sunday investigators had not determined what led up to the fight.

“Nothing new at this point. We’re still investigating what happened,” he said.

In August 2018, four inmates at the North Fork Correctional Center in Sayre were hospitalized after a fight was reported. None of their injuries was life-threatening.
