Fla. death row inmate’s conviction overturned after 28 years

Supreme Court found that DNA results heavily influenced the outcome of his original trial

MIAMI, Fla. — Inmate Paul Hildwin has been on Florida’s death row for 28 years after allegedly killing a woman whose naked body was found in the trunk of her car.

The Daily News reports that Hildwin’s conviction was overturned by the Florida Supreme Court after deciding that DNA evidence heavily influenced it.

He was convicted in 1990 of the murder of Vronzettie Cox, becoming the chief suspect after items belonging to Cox were found in his possession.

While Hildwin admitted to stealing from Cox, he said he left while she was still alive and arguing with her boyfriend, William Haverty.

DNA tests, completed in 2003, done on semen and saliva found at the crime scene did not match Hildwin, despite prosecutor’s claims. They were later found to match Haverty.

Hildwin remains on death row until prosecutors decide whether to retry him.
