KINCHELOE, Mich. — Three prisoners tried to scale a fence to escape an Upper Peninsula prison while two others attempted to distract officers on Monday, Aug. 3.

The three prisoners were in the restroom of their housing unit around 10:30 p.m. Monday at Chippewa Correctional Facility in Kincheloe when two others worked to distract officers to give them time to slip out of the housing unit and climb a fence to escape the state prison, Upper Michigan’s Source reports.

Corrections officers were immediately alerted to the attempt. An officer was at the scene within a minute, and the entire incident lasted about two minutes, the report said. The prisoners were ordered to the ground and quickly complied. The prisoners were restrained and escorted. The three would-be escapees and the two accomplices are now in segregation units.

The officers involved will be commended for their quick action, said MDOC spokesman Chris Gautz.
