RACINE, Wisc. — An inmate washing windows outside the Law Enforcement Center of the Racine County Jail decided to leave the facility.
According to The Journal Times, inmates pay a fee to participate in the work-release program but are largely unsupervised. If the inmates do not return to the jail at a certain time, they are listed as escapees.
The inmate, Matthew Valdez, who left asked another for a coat before going.
A passerby reported seeing Valdez on Main Street and returnd his discarded vest that marked him as an inmate out on community service work.
Valdez was recaptured and returned to the jail on April 3.
