NEW ORLEANS — Derrick Groves, the last of the 10 escaped inmates who fled the Orleans Parish jail in the middle of the night in May, was recaptured in Atlanta on Wednesday after a standoff with law enforcement.
His arrest marks the end of a months-long saga, set off when the group fled from the lockup after breaking through a cell door and sliding through a hole in the wall behind a toilet as a lone guard took a meal break.
Though a majority of the inmates were recaptured in the first month, Groves, who is considered the most violent of the escapees, has remained elusive. A $50,000 reward, pooled together from multiple agencies, was being offered for information leading to his arrest.
Here’s a timeline of the efforts to recapture all 10 inmates.
Kendell Myles: May 16
Myles, 20, was the first escapee to be recaptured. Louisiana State Police said they used intelligence-led techniques” to track him down in the French Quarter, where they arrested him near the 200 block of Royal Street before noon on May 16, less than 12 hours after he fled the jail.
While he was on the run, police said Myles carjacked and shot a 59-year-old Uptown man, Scott Toups, who spent 70 days in the ICU and survived.
Robert Moody: May 16
Moody’s arrest in Central City came several hours after Myles was recaptured. Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office deputies found Moody in the 3500 block of Second Street with the help of a Crimestoppers tip.
Before he broke free from the New Orleans jail, Moody, 21, was being held in jail on drug and weapons-related charges that he pleaded not guilty to in 2023. He also pleaded not guilty to an additional charge for “obscenity in July 2024, which he apparently picked up while in custody.
Dkenan Dennis: May 16
Dennis, 24, was arrested on Dale Street in New Orleans East one day after the jailbreak.
Dennis had been jailed on charges of armed robbery, second-degree kidnapping and illegal possession of weapons, among other offenses. He pleaded not guilty.
Gary Price: May 19
After spending four days on the lam, authorities recaptured Price, 21, in New Orleans East.
Price was initially jailed on a May 6 count of attempted first-degree murder along with six domestic offenses, including aggravated second-degree battery, aggravated assault with a firearm and domestic abuse battery.
Corey Boyd: May 20
Boyd, 19, was arrested in the 1400 block of Iberville Street near Treme after FBI agents tracked his location.
Boyd is accused of killing a witness who caught him and two others trying to break into their car in April 2024. He pleaded not guilty.
Leo Tate Sr: May 26
Tate, 31, and another escapee were both arrested by the Texas Department of Public Safety in Walker County, Texas, north of Houston, a little over a week after the escape.
Tate was initially jailed on charges of second-degree murder and attempted second-degree murder in connection with a 7th Ward double shooting in 2018, which killed 19-year-old Alexis Banks and hospitalized a teen.
He accepted a plea deal in September 2021 , in which the murder-related charges were dismissed, and he was convicted of obstruction of justice and sentenced to 10 years behind bars, according to jail records.
Jermaine Donald: May 26
Donald, 42, was arrested alongside Tate in Texas on May 26.
Donald has a long criminal history but was most recently charged in December 2023 with second-degree murder and possession of a firearm by a felon, court records show. He pleaded not guilty in April 2024.
Lenton Vanburen : May 26
Lenton Vanburen Jr, 26, was arrested in Baton Rouge on May 26 following an anonymous tip.
Vanburen was charged with second-degree murder in connection with a November 2021 fatal shooting in New Orleans East. He pleaded not guilty in April 2022.
Antoine Massey: June 27
Six weeks after the jailbreak, Massey was recaptured in the Hollygrove neighborhood after an anonymous tipster notified Orleans Parish Sheriff Susan Hutson of his whereabouts.
Massey, who has a history of skirting custody, was most recently jailed on charges of parole violation, motor vehicle theft and domestic abuse battery involving strangulation, after what investigators described as a gruesome fight with a girlfriend in November 2024 that left her bruised and bloodied. He was also wanted by St. Tammany Parish authorities on suspicion of kidnapping and rape.
