Kan. county jail approves $3.6M for new kitchen

New kitchen will be built in a new building attached to the currently standing facility

TOPEKA, Kan. — The Shawnee County Corrections Department is getting a new kitchen, after funds were approved for its construction.

WIBW reports that the new kitchen will be built in a new building attached to the currently standing facility. The old kitchen was constructed in 1987 and was designed to send out 600 meals a day, but the inmate population inside the jail has since increased to over 1,600.

KBS Construction Inc. has been hired to build the new facility.

It’s hoped that a newer, better kitchen will more adequately fulfill its role, and will keep inmates from “having complaints of being underfed, lack of quality food or tasteless food,” according to Director Brian Cole.

It’s hoped that construction will begin in June.
