HAGERSTOWN, Md. — Officials say a new housing unit at a Hagerstown prison offers better security and relief from overcrowding.
Lt. J.E. Whiteman says the 192-cell unit that opened at the Maryland Correctional Training Center in June features 360-degree security cameras that can’t be blocked by inmates.
Sgt. Kelly Barciz says the building houses inmates who are enrolled in or have completed the prison’s drug- and alcohol-treatment programs.
She says it offers them more living space, as well as classroom space.
