New Hampshire jail begs improvement

All male inmates are currently being housed in the former gymnasium

Concord, NH — The head of the Belknap County jail says a new facility isn’t in the budget this year, but it should be before too long.

Superintendent Daniel Ward said that he knows no one wants to spend money but that the urgency to build a new jail is increasing given the current building’s safety and structural problems.

He told the Citizen that male inmates are being housed in what used to be the gymnasium and that all female inmates, regardless of security level, are housed in the same dorm-style attic room. The facility was built in the mid-1800s and was last expanded in 1989.
