STANDISH, Mich. — While a final decision could be months, if not years, away on whether to turn Standish Maximum Correctional Facility into a federal prison, government officials wasted no time this week gathering information on the facility and meeting with local residents.
Representatives of the Federal Bureau of Prisons spent Wednesday in meetings with residents whose property surrounds the now-closed state prison on M-61 in Lincoln Township.
The meetings come on the heels of a Tuesday tour of the facility with state and local officials, including U.S. Rep. Bart Stupak, D-Menominee, and Patricia Caruso, director of the state Department of Corrections.
