La. CO kills inmate after courthouse confrontation

The in-custody inmate was at the courthouse for official business when the incident occurred

FRANKLIN, La. — An in-custody inmate was shot, sustaining life-threatening injuries, after an incident at the St. Mary Parish Courthouse on December 12, 2022. Sheriff Blaise Smith confirmed the person was shot shortly before 9 a.m.

According to a Louisiana State Police news release, the inmate sustained life-threatening injuries during a confrontation. The inmate was taken by ambulance to a hospital where he was pronounced deceased.

Detectives assigned to the Louisiana State Police Bureau of Investigations are investigating the in-custody death. The incident is reported to have involved a confrontation between a Corrections Deputy and an in-custody inmate transported to the courthouse for official business.

No deputies were injured during the incident.

St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office says further information will be released when it becomes available.
