RENO, Nev. — A sheriff is considering buying new bunk beds and plexiglass for his jail after two inmates died by suicide within 12 hours of each other last Friday.

According to News 4, the sheriff’s office has already gotten quotes on the cost to retrofit bunk beds and make them safer.

Washoe County Sheriff Darin Balaam says the mental health housing unit doesn’t have protective plexiglass on many of the floors and he is currently in the process of finding vendors to add new glass in other housing units to prevent suicides.

There have been seven attempted suicides since January and over 400 instances where deputies were able to intervene before an inmate tried to take their life, Balaam says.
