BUFFALO, N.Y. — Deputies at the Erie County holding center prevented a suicide on December 7, 2022.

According to John C. Garcia, Erie County Sheriff, at approximately 8:39 a.m., deputies were performing their rounds when they observed an incarcerated individual seated in a housing cell with a sheet wrapped around his neck and tied to the cell bars. When deputies entered the cell, the incarcerated individual resisted the deputies’ attempts to intervene.

Eventually, deputies were able to cut the sheet from the incarcerated individual’s neck.

Medical staff from the Division of Correctional Health assumed care of the individual, and he was transported to an area hospital via ambulance for further evaluation and treatment.

The individual was discharged from the hospital and returned to the holding center.
