NEW HAVEN, Conn. — Three workers at the New Haven Correctional Center were injured Monday during an incident that began when an inmate attacked a healthcare worker, authorities said.
The assault took place around 11:35 a.m. following a medical evaluation, according to a news release from Andrius Banevicius , a spokesperson for the state Department of Correction.
Banevicius said the inmate ran towards and hit the healthcare worker in the back of the head, knocking them to the ground. He said the worker was transported by an ambulance to a local hospital for treatment.
“Despite the individual continuing his assaultive behavior, responding correctional staff were able to quickly secure and remove him from the area,” Banevicius said.
Banevicius said two of the responding correctional officers sustained injuries during the incident, and both were taken to an area health clinic for treatment.
Banevicius said Connecticut State Police are investigating the assault. He declined to identify the inmate, citing the ongoing police probe.
According to the DOC, the jail currently houses around 500 inmates. State records show about 75% of the inmates are awaiting trial and have not been sentenced.
In a statement, Interim DOC Commissioner Sharonda Carlos said she is grateful for the “compassion, courage and professionalism” of prison staff and pledged to ensure their safety.
“It is deeply upsetting when an employee is subject to violence while carrying out their duties, particularly an employee whose role is to provide care to those in our custody,” Carlos said.
The attack is the latest in a recent string of violent incidents involving inmates and staffers at state prisons and jails. In early June, six prison staffers were injured at Cheshire Correctional Institution when an inmate attacked guards.
A few days later state troopers responded to Corrigan Correctional Institution after an inmate attempted to sexually assault a clinical social worker. About a month later in July, several staff members at the same prison were attacked by an inmate during a routine medical examination, officials have said.
