TUCSON, Ariz. — An inmate receiving medical care at a hospital was shot and killed after an altercation with a Pima County corrections officer, authorities said.

The incident occurred shortly before 1 p.m. on Oct. 22 inside Banner University Medical Center South’s emergency room.

“Our corrections officer found herself in a struggle with the inmate, and she fired a round, striking the inmate,” Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos said during a press briefing. “The inmate has succumbed to his injuries.”

According to Nanos, the inmate had been transported from the Pima County Adult Detention Complex for treatment. Authorities did not release further details about why the inmate was receiving treatment or what led to the struggle.

No hospital staff or other corrections officers were injured in the incident.

The Pima Regional Critical Incident Team, composed of multiple local law enforcement agencies, has launched an investigation into the shooting. The Oro Valley Police Department is leading the investigation.
