Maine gov. calls on lawmakers to overhaul county jail system

Gov. Paul LePage says he won’t support giving the system any more money until lawmakers develop a new plan for how to run it

AUGUSTA, Maine — Maine’s county jails face a shortfall of more than $2 million and Gov. Paul LePage says he won’t support giving the system any more money until lawmakers develop a new plan for how to run it.

Resignations have brought the five-member Board of Corrections down to two authorized members. That means the board cannot take any action because it lacks a quorum.

The Republican governor tells the Maine Public Broadcasting Network that he won’t nominate new members to the board or support additional funding for the county jails until lawmakers overhaul the system.

LePage says he doesn’t care if the counties or the state controls the jails. But he says that the current system lacks accountability and is wasting taxpayer dollars.
