Md. revises social media policy for officer applicants

HAGERSTOWN, Md. — Maryland’s prison agency says it will no longer ask prospective correctional officers to divulge login information for their social media accounts.

The policy changes announced Wednesday also make clear that job applicants don’t have to discuss their use of social media as a condition of employment.

The changes follow an American Civil Liberties Union complaint in January that an officer seeking to return to work after medical leave was ordered to divulge his Facebook login information. The prison agency says compliance was always voluntary.

The agency says it seeks the information to help weed out applicants with criminal histories or gang connections.
