LEAVENWORTH, Kan. — A man that attempted to get an extra piece of pizza at a Leavenworth County correctional facility was found guilty of attempted aggravated battery Tuesday after he tried to push past a correctional officer during the process.

Wyatt Parnell, 42, pleaded no contest in Leavenworth County court Tuesday to one count of attempted aggravated battery, according to a Leavenworth County court document. A judge found Parnell guilty.

On Dec. 26, 2019, Parnell entered the dining hall at the Lansing Correctional Facility at 6:30 p.m., where he collected a dinner tray, according to a press release from Leavenworth County Attorney Todd Thompson.

Parnell took an additional slice of pizza from another tray in the dining hall, Thompson said. When a correctional officer repeatedly instructed Parnell to put his tray down and leave the area, he refused.

The officer attempted to retrieve the tray and instructed Parnell, again, to leave the area, Thompson said. Parnell then allegedly pulled the tray away from the officer, threw it on the floor, and attempted to push past the officer.

The officer attempted to detain Parnell, who allegedly did not cooperate, Thompson said. A scuffle ensued.

Parnell is currently being held in the Hutchinson Correctional Facility, according to the Kansas Department of Corrections inmate locator.

He is set to appear for a sentencing hearing on March 25, Thompson said.
