A Virginia grand jury has indicted an inmate accused of killing a corrections officer and seriously injuring two others during a violent attack inside River North Correctional Center.
John Holomon Russell, 32, was indicted by a Grayson County grand jury in connection with the Nov. 17 attack that killed Master Corrections Officer Jeremy Lewis Hall and injured two additional officers, authorities said.
Russell faces the following charges:
- One count of aggravated murder
- Two counts of attempted aggravated murder
- One count of malicious wounding
- One count of aggravated malicious wounding
“I want to thank Grayson County Commonwealth’s Attorney Brandon R. Boyles and his office for pursuing charges for the unspeakable killing of Master Corrections Officer Jeremy Lewis Hall and attack on two additional members of our River North corrections team,” Virginia Department of Corrections Director Chad Dotson said. “The VADOC will continue to seek prosecution to the fullest extent of the law – and our agency will never stop saying Officer Hall’s name and honoring his legacy of service and sacrifice in the line of duty.”
At the time of the attack, Russell was serving a combined sentence of 11 years and 11 months. His convictions included a 2017 Fairfax County carjacking case in which he was sentenced to 15 years with 8 years and 1 month suspended, three years for use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and a separate Albemarle County shoplifting conviction carrying a sentence of four years and eight months, with two years and eight months suspended.
The attack occurred during the morning hours at River North Correctional Center. Two additional officers were transported to a local hospital for treatment and later released.
