BALTIMORE — An Eastern Shore inmate was sentenced to life in prison last week for the murder of his cellmate at Eastern Correctional Institution in Westover.

Prosecutors said Leslie Broadway, 27, and Virgil Robinson Jr . were incarcerated together in a locked cell in the prison’s segregation unit on Sept. 20, 2024 .

Investigators said a correctional officer, during rounds, noticed through the locked cell door that Robinson was lying on the floor unresponsive, with a liquid on his back.

“Broadway was acting erratically and was removed from the cell. Broadway made comments about urinating on Robinson. He also stated that they shouldn’t put Bloods and Crips together in a cell,” prosecutors said in a news release Tuesday.

The autopsy report showed Robinson died of multiple injuries, including asphyxia, a fractured hyoid bone, and blunt force injuries to the head, neck and torso, prosecutors said.

On March 5 , after a three-day jury trial, Broadway was found guilty of first-degree murder and related charges. After a presentence investigation, he was sentenced June 24 to life in prison in the Division of Corrections, according to the Somerset County State’s Attorney’s Office.

The case is listed as under appeal. The Baltimore Sun reached out to the Office of the Public Defender for comment.
