ABILENE, Texas — A correctional officer cadet died in the line of duty, the Texas Department of Criminal Justice announced.

Cadet Michelle Strube, 46, died during a routine pre-service training at the Robertson Unit Training Center on Aug. 19, according to TDCJ. Strube joined the agency in August 2024.

“Cadet Strube committed to protecting and serving the state of Texas. There is no higher calling than that,” Texas Board of Criminal Justice Chairman Eric Nichols said. “Our prayers are with her family, friends and academy cohort during this difficult time.

TDCJ said the pre-service training is a six-week course that all cadets complete before starting as a correctional officer at their assigned unit.
