NEW YORK — Four Rikers Island corrections officers have been taken to a local hospital in serious condition after three separate inmate attacks.

According to the New York Daily Post, the first occurred between an inmate and an officer in a mental observation unit before 6:30 p.m. Wednesday night. The second occurred an hour later, when an officer was assaulted in the General Population Unit.

Two more COs were injured during a mass pepper-spraying of General Population inmates after they refused to lock into their cells for the night.

The COs who were injured inhaled the noxious fumes as well and then assaulted during the melee.

No inmates were injured during any of the assaults. No names have been released.
