HOMEWOOD, Ala. — A Homewood City Jail corrections officer was killed in an overnight traffic crash.

The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office identified the fatality victim as George Chadwick Mumpower. He was 50 and lived in Helena.

The wreck happened at 10:50 p.m. Wednesday in the 3400 block of Morgan Road.

Authorities said Mumpower was the driver and lone occupant of a Toyota Camry. Details of the crash have not been released, but coroner’s officials said no other vehicles were involved.

Mumpower was pronounced dead on the scene at 11:30 p.m.

The Homewood Police Department posted this statement on Facebook:

“The Homewood Police Department is saddened to announce the passing of a loved member of our Police family. Corrections Officer Chad Mumpower went home to go be with his Heavenly Father last night. Chad started his career with the Homewood Police Department in 1998 and was a faithful and dedicated coworker. Chad leaves behind a wife and a daughter, along with his mother and father. Please keep his family and the members of the Homewood Police department in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.”
