CORCORAN, Calif. — A Corcoran State Prison correctional officer was airlifted to a local hospital after prison officials say he was stabbed multiple times by an inmate.

The CO was walking inmates back to the facility on October 22, when inmate Dan Felix, 35, escaped his handcuffs with a handmade key and attacked the officer, Hanford Sentinel reported.

The CO was stabbed multiple times in the neck, head, and shoulder with a makeshift weapon, officials told the publication.

When additional COs tried to restrain inmates, one officer was kicked by an inmate, Steven Rivera, 25. Two other officers were injured in the fight.

Officials say the CO who was stabbed is in good condition. The other three officers were also taken to a nearby hospital, according to the publication.

According to prison records, Felix is serving life with the possibility of parole for attempted murder.

Rivera is serving life without parole for two counts of first-degree murder.

An investigation is ongoing.
