FRESNO, Calif. — A Fresno County jail CO remains in critical condition nearly two months after a parolee walked in the jail lobby and opened fire.

Officer Toamalama Scanlan remains in critical condition. He had two major surgeries in the past week, ABC30 reported. Officer Juanita Davila was shot in the face and is recovering at home.

Family members told the station Scanlan is responsive, but remains in the ICU.

“I talk to him about personal things, like, ‘I have a friend, I want you to meet her,’ stuff like that,” Robert, Scanlan’s son, told the station. “I show him a picture. I was like, ‘Nod if you think she’s pretty,’ sometimes he won’t nod. So, he’s there. He’s there with me. I always massage his feet because that’s something we did when we were kids because he always worked long shifts.”

Scanlan has had surgery to repair his skull and stomach surgery for digestive problems. He continues to have fevers and threats of infection, according to the station.

Fresno County Sheriff Margaret Mims said the inmates are still asking about him and wondering what they can do to help.

“The inmates respected him,” she said. “They knew that he could take care of business, but he didn’t have to. It’s just because of the way he related to the inmates and, as a result, the inmates actually wrote get well notes. They wanted to donate money.”

Scanlan was set to be transferred to a rehab facility before the surgeries, but the move has been postponed for now.
