STORMVILLE, N.Y. — Green Haven Correctional Facility inmates have attacked correctional officers twice over the past two months.
“Both these attacks were unprovoked and could have easily killed both officers if not for the quick actions of their fellow officers,” said Mike Mazzella, vice president of NYSCOPBA Mid-Hudson Region. “The fact that both inmates chose to attack both officers for no apparent reason is alarming.”
The Union told the Poughkeepsie Journal, inmate Tirone Moore, 29, approached a CO, took off his shirt and punched the officer in the face. Moore was detained and put in a special housing unit.
Inmate Lawrence Mikel, 47, punched and choked an officer until he was unconscious in September, according to the publication.
When the officer ordered Mikel walk through a cell sense, the inmate pushed the officer, punched him in the face, and “choked him until he lost consciousness,” the union said.
Mikel has been transferred out of Green Haven.
