FLORENCE, Ariz. — Recently released footage of a prison melee in Arizona shows the dangers a correctional officer faces on the job.

The footage was shot back in April but the Department of Corrections only recently received permission from its attorneys to release the video, according to FOX News.

The video shows tens of inmates standing up to confront an officer in a mess hall. More officers appear, but the inmates are unresponsive to commands to back down. They refuse to allow a female officer to leave the mess hall, and then they attack.

The inmates broke up as they were sprayed with pepper spray and the attack lasted only 14 seconds.

One officer suffered severe head injuries, hospitalizing him for months. Another officer was honored for shielding that man with his own body.
