FLORENCE, Ariz. — Surveillance footage caught the moment when an inmate attacked a correctional officer at Eyman State Prison Complex in Florence on July 21.

The video shows the officer handcuffing the inmate through the cell window. Seconds later, the inmate escapes his cuffs and he rushes from his cell toward the CO.

Backup can be seen running to the scene while the inmate is put onto a gurney and taken away from the area.

According to a statement from the Arizona Department of Corrections, the department is pursuing aggravated assault charges against the male inmate.

“The video is a good illustration of the danger inmates pose to our officers and staff every day, especially in a maximum-custody unit,” ADC spokesman Andrew Wilder told Casa Grande Dispatch. “Thanks to the officer’s quick reaction, he sustained only minor injuries, for which he was treated and released -- returning to work the very next day.”
