DRAPER, Utah — A Utah State Prison inmate was in critical condition late Tuesday morning after being stabbed.
The victim, 25, reportedly was conscious and breathing as paramedics treated him for a stab wound to the chest.
Unified Fire Capt. Cliff Burningham said the inmate was stabilized and then flown by medical helicopter to University Hospital in Salt Lake City.
The attack occurred about 11:20 a.m. inside a cell in the prison’s maximum security section, which was immediately ordered into a lockdown.
“It was an incident between cell mates, but we don’t have any further information about what caused the incident, or the specific kind of weapon used.
It remains under investigation,” prison spokesman Steve Gehrke said.
