Calif. jail gets cameras to cover blind spots

Blind spots have been a headache for staff, allowing for fights or drug use to go undetected

CALAVERAS COUNTY, Calif. — In about a month, officials expect to be done adding surveillance cameras to cover areas missed by the system installed during jail construction.

The Calaveras Enterprise reports that the blind spots have been a headache for staff, allowing for fights or drug use to go undetected.

County supervisors approved paying $110,410 to install additional cameras in both the jail and adjoining Sheriff’s Office administration building. Justice Systems Corporation will do the work.

Inmates moved into the recently finished jail in June, and immediately began to figure out the limitations of the surveillance system.

The Sheriff’s Office administration building was found lacking in cameras as well, in both the front lobby and records room.

Employees did have concerns about additional cameras in their work areas, and all were brought up with the sheriff. In some cases, the position of the cameras would be adjusted to address employee concerns.
