LOS ANGELES — After three scanners proved effective inside Los Angeles county jails, an additional number of them will be put into effect.
Sheriff Jim McDonnell said initial testing was used to deduce if the counties had the staffing to man the 20 body scanners they’d been funded for, according to the Santa Clarita Valley Signal. The three that were put into use proved effective, finding a live bullet and heroin on inmates during scanning at different facilities.
“All in all, the system is proving positive,” said the assistant sheriff. “We’re going to continue to expand the use of body scanners.”
While staffing remains an issue, they hope to work out a better system to use the scanners due to their value in locating contraband.
The sheriff says that “huge progress” has been made inside the jails toward making it a safer place for inmates and staff. There’s been a marked reduction in use of force against inmates by sheriff’s deputies, officers are being rotated to prevent cliques and a new audit and inspections unit has been created, according to My News LA.
