LINCOLN — The Nebraska Department of Corrections is planning to upgrade its computer software to calculate more prison sentences automatically.
WOWT reports that the move comes a year after hundreds of inmates were released too early.
The new software will help minimize the possibility of human error in the calculation process and the change is just one step toward prison reform, according to Scott Frakes, the DOC’s new director.
The upgrades should be completed by October.
An investigative committee concluded last year that prison officials ignored several state Supreme Court rulings that outlined the correct way to calculate sentences. Several of those wrong sentences were calculated manually by staff, because of gaps in the current system.
