ROCKFORD, Ill. — To boost recruitment, the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office has lowered the minimum age requirement for correctional officers from 21 to 18.
The decision to lower the age requirement comes after discussions with AFSCME Local 473, the union representing correctional officers, during labor-management meetings focused on staffing solutions, the sheriff’s office said in a statement.
“This is a common sense step that opens the door for young adults who are ready to start a meaningful and rewarding career in public service,” said Sheriff Gary Caruana. “We value the partnership with the Union and appreciate their engagement in helping us find practical solutions to staffing challenges in the jail.”
Union leadership also voiced strong support for the policy shift.
“Lowering the hiring age to 18 creates a path for young, motivated individuals to begin their careers earlier, receive proper training and grow with the department,” said Jenny Zammuto-Williams, president of AFSCME Local 473. “It’s a win-win for the agency and the community we serve.”
Applicants aged 18 to 20 must still complete all state-mandated training and certifications. The Sheriff’s Office is accepting applications immediately.
